Do You Need Vitamin Supplements To Boost Your Detox Diet

General Add comments

When you start your detox diet, you’ll want to take some vitamin supplements that will help your internal organs and boost the effects of your detox. You’ll get a good liver detox from all of the supplements but if you wish to try a more intense detox there are many other herbal remedies you can include in your plan. If you decide to opt for the extras I’d suggest you take it up with a qualified nutritional consultant.

What to eat on your detox diet

Lots of Fruit and Vegetables

All types can be included – you just need to ensure you get a wide choice of them every day. Doing so will make sure you get a better mix of all the fundamental phytochemicals (beneficial plant substances).

Plan your diet so you eat a minimum of three fruits per day. Choose different colored fruit to ensure you get a good variety of nutrients, vitamins and antioxidants. You can be eating fruit all day, fruit deserts are great, between meals as snacks or in smoothies and freshly prepared detox drinks. A piece of dried fruit is a great snack too.

Have at least three portions of vegetables daily. Pretty much every vegetable is worthwhile including in your detox diet. Make at least one of these a cruciferous vegetable (Brussels sprouts, broccoli, watercress, cauliflower or cabbage) as these have glucosinolates, which are well known for increasing the power of your liver’s detoxification properties, so you get a thorough liver detox as well.

The best way to eat vegetables is the same as fruit – raw in crispy fresh salads but if do cook them just lightly steamed so that the enzymes and nutrients are preserved as much as possible. It’s also a good idea to juice vegetables as they make a great detox drink.

Grains, bread and pasta

Reduce the quantities of wheat in your diet and replace it with wholegrain foods. Quinoa, millet, brown rice, yeast free and gluten free breads, 100 per cent rye bread, pumpernickel bread, rye crackers, wheat-free and whole grain pasta and oatcakes are all desirable.

There’s a lot less gluten in oats than in wheat and are allowed but you may want to steer clear of them if you have problems with bloating or you’re sensitive to gluten.

You get a lot of fiber from wholegrains, as well as most of the B vitamins and vitamin E, essential minerals like iron, magnesium, potassium, selenium and zinc, complex carbs (the good stuff) and some essential oils. All these different types of foods listed above, supply your body with "slow release" carbs, which fuel your body a lot longer. Make sure you have at least one serving of wholegrain bread, pasta of grains in each meal.

Pulses, Grains and Sprouted Beans

There’s lots of healthy protein in pulses, as well as B vitamins, they’re high in fiber and also contain zinc and iron. The best way to eat them is buy them dry, then soak and cook according to the instructions on the packet. Prepared and tinned pulses are fine but make sure you drain them and wash them well if they’ve been stored in salty water.

Feel free to indulge in all varieties of lentils and bean sprouts when you are on a detox diet. Sprouted beans are a great choice on a detox diet. They contain lots of natural enzymes, vitamins and minerals as well as protein. Sprouted beans are available from health food shops or most big supermarkets. Alternatively, you can grow your own sprouts.
